Police arrest Defoe by 'mistake'

Jermain Defoe was mistakenly arrested and held in custody for more than five hours on Monday prior to Tottenham's pre-season tour of Asia.

Defoe was arrested on suspicion of driving while disqualified, but it emerged an error was made as the forward's disqualification had been suspended pending an appeal.

"Despite being told Mr Defoe was not breaking the law and calling for his immediate release, the police would not agree to free him until they could clarify the position with the courts," said Defoe's solicitor, Nick Freeman.

Mr Freeman also claimed the police also refused to return his car keys, which were on the same bunch as his house keys, causing Defoe extreme difficulties, not least because he had to return home and pack for the tour.
